California's Golden Trout Benefit from TU's Hard Work
Golden trout are a sought-after fish species native to California and a very unique species for anglers. Golden trout are considered one of the most beautiful trout in the world. Golden trout have a few places of native habitat in California, but are also in need of conservation and restoration.
Some of their native habitat is located in the Sierra Nevada, the Golden Trout Wilderness is the native range of the Golden Trout. This area includes parts of the Inyo National Forest and Sequoia National Forest. They are also found in South Fork Kern River. This river, flowing through the Golden Trout Wilderness, is one of the primary habitats for Golden Trout. Volcanic Creek is also a native habitat within the Golden Trout Wilderness.
In a recent article from the Trout Unlimited website, TU's staff and volunteers are featured working to help golden trout in California.
From the article:
Like most of the habitat across the California golden trout’s native range, this remote landscape shows evidence of historic land uses that changed riparian vegetation. This degradation is what TU’s Golden Trout Project is working to repair on a new scale. After years of planning, TU and a dedicated network of state, federal and private partners are launching an ambitious effort to protect and restore the remaining habitat of California golden trout.
