Bringing Back Cutthroats: Wyoming Trout Restoration
The Yellowstone cutthroat trout is a native species with a home basin in the heart of some of the West's most cherished fisheries. Wyoming has taken a giant step forward to restoring these iconic gamefish. With a goal to bring back these fish to parts of the Big Horn Basin, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department hopes to create thriving populations of native trout.

Because rainbows cross-breed and produce hybridized “cut-bow” offspring, preserving true Yellowstone cutthroat requires maintaining numerous populations that are isolated from other species. “Headwater isolation” is the agency’s preferred method of achieving the goal.
