Going fishing on a river near you is great way to get out and enjoy the rivers, streams, and lakes close to home. From trout to smallmouth to steelhead sometimes going on an overnight camping and floating trip is something you just must do. But, don't leave the boat ramp and start your fishing adventure near you without proper planning. Here are some secrets to ensuring your packing goes smooth and you don't get down the river and realize you forgot the salt for the margeheritas!

Pack Efficiently

Use waterproof dry bags to keep your clothes, sleeping gear, and food dry. Compress bulky items like sleeping bags to save space into compression sacks.

Choose the Right Gear

Select a lightweight tent or tarp that’s easy to set up and waterproof. Bring a sleeping bag rated for the temperature you expect. Consider a sleeping pad for insulation and comfort.

Food and Cooking Supplies

Plan easy-to-cook meals (freeze-dried, dehydrated, or quick-cook options). Bring a lightweight stove, fuel, pots, and utensils. Don’t forget a can opener. If you're bringing perishable food, a small cooler with ice packs can be handy.

Clothing Essentials

Pack moisture-wicking base layers, insulating layers, and a waterproof outer layer. Bring an extra set of clothes in case you get wet. Pack sturdy water shoes or sandals for the river, plus comfortable shoes for around camp.

Safety and First Aid

Always carry a basic first aid kit tailored to your needs. Download your river map via onWater Fish or PaddleWays and go with confidence.

Stay Hydrated and Plan for More Water

Carry enough water and a backup container. Bring a water filter or purification tablets to ensure safe drinking water.

Headlamps, Lanterns, and Tools

A headlamp is great for hands-free work and lanterns are nice for ambience. Bring plenty of batteries. Pack the proper tools like a hatches or knife to get the job done.

Insect and Sun Protection

Keep bugs at bay with a good repellent. Protect yourself from UV rays, especially when on the water, by using sunscreen.

Have a Packing Checklist

Make a packing checklist to ensure you don’t forget anything. Double-check before you leave.

Leave it Better than you Found It

Bring bags to pack out all waste. Follow Leave No Trace principles to minimize your impact.
