Get Involved Today: New York State Trout Unlimited and Owego Creek
Owego Creek is a tributary of the Susquehanna River, located in south-central New York. It flows through the town of Owego in Tioga County and is known for its scenic beauty and fishing opportunities. Like many trout streams across the country, it is need of protection and restoration. Anglers often come to Owego Creek for its variety of fish species. The creek's varying environments, from fast-moving riffles to deeper pools, provide good habitat diversity. Fly fishing is a popular method here, especially for trout in the upper sections. The surrounding area is tranquil, making it a great spot for both fishing and nature observation.
The New York Council of Trout Unlimited is working to protect and enhance the fishing on Owego Creek with its Fiver Year Strategic Plan.
The New York-based TU National staff, in close collaboration with the New York State Council and the Al Hazzard and Leon Chandler Chapters, are working hand in hand with esteemed local partners. They will strive to gain a comprehensive understanding of the salmonid resources, habitat, fluvial dynamics, threats, and opportunities in the Owego Creek watershed. The first two years will be devoted mainly to conducting meticulous assessments. These assessments will serve as the foundation for a comprehensive plan and timetable to reconnect, restore, and sustain the cold-water resources in the watershed. This thorough approach will ensure the success of the project. The plan will then be executed over the final three years, with the engagement of contractors to handle the heavy equipment and others to perform the on-the-ground work.
Overall, the strategic plan aims to create a comprehensive approach to managing Owego Creek to benefit the environment, the local community, and the economy. Anticipated benefits and outcomes are:
Implementing Flood Mitigation Measures: Owego Creek is prone to flooding, which can cause significant damage to properties and infrastructure.
Environmental Protection: Ensuring that the creek's environmental integrity is maintained and enhanced, protecting wildlife habitats and water quality because the creek and its surrounding areas are home to diverse ecosystems.
Community Development: Ensuring sustainable regional development, balancing growth with preserving natural resources.
Creating Recreational Opportunities: A well-maintained creek and surrounding areas can provide recreational opportunities for residents and visitors, such as fishing, boating, and hiking.
Creating Positive Economic Impact: By managing and enhancing the creek and its surroundings, you can contribute to the local economy through increased tourism and property values.
